Frequently asked questions

Everything you might wonder before your group's next trip.

Getting started

Do I need an account?

No. You create a trip and get a private link — anyone you share it with can add and edit expenses. If you want a place to see all your trips in one list, you can optionally attach your email, but it's never required to use RoamTally.

How do people join my trip?

Share the trip link. That link is the key to the trip, so only send it to people you want to have access. For a little extra protection you can set an optional password on the trip.

Is it really free?

Yes. Creating trips, adding people and expenses, every split method, and optimized settle-up are all free with no limits, no account, and no card.

Splitting & settling up

What ways can I split an expense?

Evenly, by shares or nights stayed, by percentage, by exact amounts, or evenly with per-person adjustments (great for “everyone split the house but I took the big room”). You can also exclude people from an individual expense.

How does settle-up work?

RoamTally adds up what everyone paid and owed, then works out the fewest payments needed to square the group up — so instead of everyone paying everyone, you get a short “who pays whom” list you can share with the other travelers.

Does RoamTally handle the actual payments?

No. RoamTally calculates the balances and gives you a clear summary; you settle up however your group already does — cash, bank transfer, or a payment app. RoamTally doesn't hold or move money.

Can I record payments as people pay each other back?

Yes. As people settle up you can mark payments as paid, and the balances update so you always know what's still outstanding.

Your data

Who can see my trip?

Anyone with the link (and the password, if you set one). The link contains a long, random code that isn't guessable, so a trip stays private as long as its link does.

How long do you keep a trip?

Active trips stick around. A trip that goes untouched for 12 months may be removed to keep things tidy — if you've attached your email, you'll get a heads-up first.

Can I delete a trip?

Yes. Deleting a trip hides it immediately for everyone. There's a short recovery window in case it was a mistake, after which it's permanently removed.
